A strategy that I always used was watching news in French. I believe that this is what most helped me to improve my French listening skills. When I started watching news on TV channels from France, it was very difficult for me in the beginning to understand the sentences and I could only figure out certain words from the plethora of news that I was bombarded with. However, I then employed the strategy of watching with subtitle to familiarise myself of the native French accent and improve my pronunciation of words by watching the reporters. Over time, this strategy did pay off as I could understand many French news stories (although not perfectly, however to such an extent that I could notice huge improvement from when I first started). I have heard that other strategies such as watching French movies and listening to French songs can also help to improve French listening skills however, it really depends on the individual as to how he/she wants to improve. For example, when I was discovering these media of improving my French listening, I chose the medium of news since I was genuinely interested in watching domestic information about France and therefore never got bored of watching it. I would recommend you to choose the medium that you will continue to pursue without feeling that it is just a method for you to improve your French skills to a moment where you are actually entertained by it!
